MPC History

In 1918, the late Martin Petersen Sr. opened up a small sheet metal shop with the purpose of serving the families of Kenosha and Racine.  Although Martin Petersen had limited resources, he believed in a philosophy based on quality, performance and service.  He also had the experience, energy and drive essential to being successful.  With these assets, Martin Petersen was able to propel a small sheet metal shop into a well recognized and respected Mechanical Contracting firm.

In the 1970s, construction boomed, Martin Petersen Company (MPC) grew, and ownership expanded beyond the Petersen family.  Specialty stainless steel fabrication was added and soon became an integral part of the company.   Mechanical Engineering was added in the 1980's and provided the opportunity to compete in the Design/Build market.  At this time, MPC purchased a pipe fitting & plumbing contractor, Koetz and Barton Company, of Waukegan, IL.   As a united team, MPC and Koetz and Barton became a full service Mechanical Contractor with the expertise to serve large commercial and industrial clients.

After many years of expansion at their Kenosha and the Waukegan addresses, MPC built a new manufacturing / office building in the Business Park of Kenosha.  In January of 1997, all operations were moved to the new Kenosha facility and the Koetz and Barton name was discontinued.    The new building size and location afforded MPC the opportunity to expand exponentially.  In addition to engineering, sheet metal, piping, plumbing, service, residential, and stainless steel fabrication, MPC expanded into pharmaceutical process skid manufacturing.  The skid manufacturing business took off and in 2002, and after three building expansions, was sold to ITT industries.  ITT formed a new spin off company and named it ITT Pureflo MPC.

With the sale of the stainless steel skid manufacturing, MPC returned to its construction roots and in 2003 relocated to a new 80,000 SF facility.  Located across the street from the old building, MPC continued the tradition of controlled steady growth.  In 2005, Midwest Construction Magazine ranked MPC as the 22nd largest Top Specialty Contractor in the Midwest and 86th largest Mechanical Contractor in the country.  That size has afforded MPC to expand into many markets.

Today MPC is a locally owned, privately held company.  The ownership group is directly involved in day to day operations.  Our employees are some of the most dedicated and competent in the industry.   The philosophy of quality, performance, and service started in 1918 by Martin Petersen Sr. still holds true today.
